[korea] flash update

2008. Apr, 11th | 05:12 am

it's 5am. i'm in damyang with my mother, on our eleventh day of backpacking across the lower part of the jeollado province. last night we entered a sauna (a jjimjilbang, 찜질방, in native lingo) to sweat out all the exhaustion in our bodies and to sleep.

but the reason why it's 5am and i'm not sleeping is because an effing pervert kept on trying to get closer to me. if i had pretended to sleep for another minute, he probably would have touched my hand. if i had pretended to sleep for another five minutes, he probably would have moved onto my breasts.

this isn't the first time it's happened, but OKAY, WTF. I AM SORT OF TIRED OF ALL THE OLD MEN TRYING TO GET A LITTLE FRIENDLY WITH ME. ENOUGH, OKAY?!

EDIT: oh my god, my mother just went in to "have a word" with the guy. omg, i love you mommy.

EDIT2: okay, apparently all she said was "just what do you come to jjimjilbang for?!" and he just sighed and turned around. i'm hoping the "perverted bastard" she added onto the end was something she said to him then, too.

[korea] bulguksa, gyeongju city

2008. Mar, 12th | 08:19 pm

Back from Vietnam! Except it wasn't just Vietnam, it was also Cambodia. ...yeah, I was surprised too. I'm hoping to rush past the next few entries, because I want to get onto Cambodia and Vietnam and just get this blog up-to-date first. I've been saying that for nearly every entry so far, but ugh, finding internet access in Korea is, for some reason, really tough?! WHY.

Let's get down to business.

Next up - Spending time (read: wasting time) in Daegu, haircut of d00m (the beginning), shopping and eating in Daegu's Seomun Market
After that - Gampo trip with grandmom, downtown Daegu with city-savvy female cousin, haircut of d00m (the climax)
Also to anticipate(?) - Time spent in Seoul, rambling movie reviews, CAMBODIA. *sparkles*. & VIETNAM. *more sparkles omg*

[korea] uh

2008. Mar, 5th | 05:24 pm

well, that was a fast change of plans. the moment after i post my previous post ("sarah's stupid adventures in seoul"), my cousin calls me and tells me to come back down to daegu that day. i can't really protest, because i'm sort of living in her place and if she tells me to go, i go. XD

so i'm in daegu right now, getting ready to go on a short trip to vietnam with my grandmom.

VIETNAM. *sparkles* :D even if it's a tour group and everything's in korean which i probably will only understand 60% of and i'm with my grandmom, who is great company but still a senior that gets tired very easily, VIETNAM. :D

this only reminds me of cambodia and how much i wanted to go volunteer there but couldn't because my parents adamantly protested even though they okayed peru, which is weird because PERU has the traveler's warning and not CAMBODIA, damn it. and peru's pricier to go to and i really really wanted to go to cambodia and a;lskdfaosdj *stops self*

...i really need to get caught up on my posts. D:

[korea] :D

2008. Mar, 3rd | 12:22 pm

i - i give up. i'll be posting more often now, but the "formal" posts - with pictures and detailed descriptions and generally less whining - will come once in a while. hopefully i can get photobucket to cooperate with me often enough so that i can get caught up asap. D:

so. yesterday... early morning, i did what was probably the stupidest thing thing i've ever done in my life and also the most interesting thing i've done in korea so far.

and now that i've had *checks time* uh, my lunch, it's time for me to head out. to, uh somewhere. perhaps to watch another movie? (i've watched like six movies so far...) i'd text the guy i sat next to on the airplane, but i don't always want to be the one initiating conversations and he's probably busy (also, it makes me seem desperate. which is a rather terrifying thought), so TIME FOR ANOTHER DAY ON MY OWN. :D oh man.

[korea] seokguram; gyeongju city

2008. Mar, 1st | 08:41 pm

Actually, the original plan I had in my head was to just screw lineal reporting and just write about all the alcohol I had today while in Seoul with my friend, but ahahaha yeah, uh, not too great a topic to write about without pictures. (...And there are pictures, omg. I just can't remember if I am in any of those pictures. D:)

It's taking such a long time to update because a) I don't have regular access to the internet, b) it takes a while to upload pictures onto photobucket, resize and rotate them when necessary, and c) to organize my thoughts and put them down into words. D: And now that I'm at my cousin's place in Seoul with internet access anytime, the internet manages to be the slowest thing on earth. Ironic, given that I'm in Korea, the most wired country on the planet. XD

Next up - a short stop at a fountain, Bulguksa, the way home.
After that - time spent in Daegu, another short excursion with my grandmom (this time to Gampo), and times spent in Seoul (a.k.a. being dragged around by my friend and spending more money in three days than I have for the month I've been here).
Also to anticipate(?) - pictures of my helmet cut of d00m.

[korea] lunar new year, gyeongju

2008. Feb, 18th | 05:24 pm

How has everyone been? Hopefully I can speed through this post and get onto more recent matters. XD

That's all I can fit in right now - I need to go out to get myself a quick dinner before resuming my search for contact lens solution. Hope everyone's alright!

[korea] what's been on the news

2008. Feb, 12th | 05:05 pm

I was going to write about the rest of my time here so far, but since Sunday night, yesterday, and this morning, something huge happened in Korea that's been monopolozing Korean news, sort of like how the assassination of Benazir Bhutto dominated 95% of the news on CNN, so I decided to write a bit about what's been dominating Korean news channels.

February 6th - 9th/10th: HIGHWAY CONDITIONS

Nearly every day so far: FIRES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY

During the Lunar holidays: OLD PEOPLE LONELY AND DEPRESSED

Febrary 10th-present: NAMDAEMUN, "GREAT SOUTH GATE", BURNS DOWN

Hope you're all having a great time, folks. As I'm writing this through whatever I might have heard on the news, correct me if there's anything incorrect about my "facts". My Korean isn't quite at the "reporting news" level yet...

[korea] i live!

2008. Feb, 10th | 01:16 pm

Finally, I have reached an internet cafe (PC rooms, as they are so affectionately called by Koreans) that does not block LiveJournal with "GreenWare". Time for an update!

I AM ALIVE! Fret not, all those who probably didn't might have worried. Underneath the cut (click the link, for any LJ newbs that might be reading this), there will be action! drama! romance! and plenty of wordiness to make up for the week+ I've been on "hiatus".

The rest will come another time, when I can visit this internet cafe again. It'll be soon~ expect a trip to Gyeongju, the historic capital of South Korea!

Also, quick question - when you take pictures of people with digital cameras, how do you get that effect where the person/people is/are in focus and the background is blurred? Is it only possible with the fancy, expensive cameras?

~Happy Lunar New Year, everyone! I hope the year of the rat is a healthy and happy one for you guys!~

[introduction] coming clean.

2008. Jan, 20th | 11:59 pm

I started this journal at first to rant about things people on Facebook might have felt too awkward to read; I had huge plans about ranting about global warming (a series!), social issues affecting people around the world, endangered species... You name it, I was planning on ranting about.

And then my dream of traveling (even short travels, to another city, to another space of woods beyond our backyard) started coming true. I wanted to write about my thoughts about those foreign cities, those places sometimes exotic and sometimes so nauseatingly familiar.

So I will. :D I think I will. If anyone's interested in reading along, please, feel free! Comments, questions, laughter... unnecessary, but appreciated if you're up to it.

BASIC PROFILE:
Sarah.
Born 1989.
Female. (Though my brother questions it...)

MISCELLANEOUS TRIVIA:
I like reading what I write. Sometimes (read: most all the time) it means that I ramble on and on, oftentimes falling into a cycle of redundancy and stupidity.
Sometimes I may sound like I'm trying really hard to be a smarty-pants, but I'm not really? I just like... writing. If ever anything I write offends you, please let me know? It's not my intention.

TRAVEL PLANS:
February 1st - depart for South Korea. Stay for at least three and a half months (May 15th?).
From there, visit and tour China & Japan.
Other countries I want to visit: Taiwan, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia... and that's only while in Korea. :D
Take a good bit of time exploring Seoul & Daegu; if mother visits, take a month or so to travel around Korea.

VISITS/PLACES TO WRITE ABOUT:
Costa Rica (March '05; 21 days)
Korea (July/August '07; two months)
Calgary (November '07; 3 days)
Cancun (December '07/January '07; 8 days)

[introductions]

2007. Dec, 17th | 01:37 am

(i know you don't want to be here, between these awkward lives and contoured spaces,)

  • can life be an artform
  • where each greeting is a splash of rumours
  • and colour
  • and each touch thereafter
  • a fissure of possibility
  • but
  • too soon there are goodbyes
  • and so sudden are the partings
  • i never want to stay in one place for too long.

(so go, baby, go; i'll call you when it's time for you to return.)
